Sixth Step: Going Home
Going home from rehab is both a scary and exciting time. When you have the right tools, like an aftercare program, alumni groups, and a powerful support network, returning to your life can be easier than you’d imagine.

Returning Home After Rehab

Once a client comes to the end of their treatment program, they may have a lot of questions, including what comes next:

  • What happens once you leave treatment?
  • How can you stay strong and focused on your recovery?
  • Will I struggle alone or will I have help?
  • Will I need to stick with long-term treatment?

These questions (and many others) are perfectly normal. (They also show you care about your sobriety, which is a very good thing.) We’re happy to answer those as well as any others you may have.

What is Aftercare? How is it Put Together?

Aftercare is a plan that helps people continue their recovery long after they leave rehab. When a solid aftercare program is implemented, it improves your chances for a healthy and successful recovery considerably, especially when compared to those who exit rehab without a continued care plan.

As you near the end of your treatment program, you’ll meet with your treatment team to start building an aftercare plan designed for your needs. This can include:

  • 12-step meetings or 12-step alternatives
  • Therapist sessions
  • Referrals to care close to home
  • Scheduled check-ins with your Mountain Springs treatment team

Do I Have to Go Home After I Leave Treatment?

Sometimes returning to the same place you were before you entered rehab can serve as a trigger and cause you to relapse. Your treatment team can sit down with you and talk about places that may be more beneficial to your continued recovery. They can also warn you against places that might be harmful. As a proactive measure, we can discuss safer alternatives to help you stay sober, including sober living facilities or government-operated halfway houses. These can serve as a transition between rehab and returning home.

What About Others Who Have Completed Treatment at Mountain Springs?

Spending so much time in treatment, not only working with our team at Mountain Springs but also in sharing your healing journey with peers, can be a vital part of recovery. That’s why we have alumni meetings for the entire Sunshine Behavioral Health family. Taking part helps build a sense of community, which keeps you engaged and more invested in your continued sobriety. Those connections also can provide new perspectives and give invaluable support.

Networking with others who have been through addiction treatment and who are still actively working to stay drug- or alcohol-free — can be one of the most important components of a lasting and successful recovery.

That’s why we’ve established an alumni group for anyone who has completed treatment with us and who wants or needs to stay focused. At these meetings, you can connect with others who are on similar journeys. It’s a safe space where you can both give and get support and enjoy the camaraderie of shared experiences.

We also have a Mountain Springs alumni Facebook page that you may join. There, any time of day, you can find kinship from people who’ve gone through recovery.
